Pushing and pulling with carts, containers or beds

Before pushing or pulling: putting the material in order

The questions below will help you prepare for a transport with a cart, bed or container. You must be able to answer all questions with 'yes':

  • Does the object have good and smooth-running wheels?
  • Do the wheels have a diameter of 12 cm or more?
  • Is the total weight of the object less than 300 kilos?
  • Are there smooth, hard and horizontal floors everywhere?
  • Are there any thresholds, bumps or potholes missing?
  • Are the handles at the correct height, i.e. elbow height?

Alternatives can be, for example: using a different moving object, charging less heavily or using a tractor.

When you need to push or pull

These rules help to put as little strain on the body as possible during transport:

  • Clear obstacles along the way first.
  • Take the most favorable route by cart, container or bed.
  • Drive with the swivel wheels on the side where you push, if possible secure the front wheels in the direction of travel.
  • Make sure the swivel wheels are on the side where you push, your back and arms are (almost) stretched and above all: start slowly!
  • Use your body weight when pushing and pulling.
  • Place one foot on the base and start the movement.
  • Move evenly and calmly. Use the 3-second rule to start the movement slowly. Use your own weight.
  • Try to keep driving and don't stop unnecessarily.
  • If you turn or need to push around the corner:
    • Never push and twist at the same time. Always push straight ahead.
    • Always walk around the cart, container or bed: so you take the 'outside bend'.
    • Never push with one arm while pulling with the other.
  • If you can't see over the cart or container:
    • Pushing would be better, but in such a case you have to pull.
    • Sometimes a (not too heavy) cart, such as a wire container, can be pushed on one side. Make sure that the arm remains bent and in front of the body.
    • Use electric locomotion if this occurs more often.
  • Practice driving with a colleague if you're new to it.
