Transport by bed or wheelchair

This is the best way to handle

  • Make sure you have a good push height (hands are the same height as elbows), put the bed at the right height.
  • Make sure that the casters and the direction wheel are in the direction of travel.
  • Pay attention to the correct driving direction. Some beds are designed to be pushed while facing the patient, meaning the patient does not always need to face the direction of travel. Start moving the bed or wheelchair gently and gradually, avoid sudden movements.
  • Avoid thresholds and slopes.
  • Pushing takes precedence over pulling.
  • If you are pulling, work at hip level.
  • Do not turn and push at the same time, walk with the rotating bed (your back will immediately notice the difference).
  • Move a bed over longer distances, preferably electrically and with a lot of manoeuvering with two people. Second person: stand at the front of the bed next to the bed instead of in front of it.
  • Check out the rules for pushing and pulling with carts, containers, or beds.
