Reach

When you have to reach for something to reach it

  • Do not reach further than your arm is long (40-60 cm).
  • Make room so you can get closer.
  • Use a step stool for grabbing small and light loads.
  • Use a ladder for grabbing larger and heavier loads.
  • Do not work for more than 1 minute with a moderately bent and/or twisted back/neck.
  • If possible, use a tool, such as an extension or extended material.
  • Support with your free hand.
  • Stand on the same side as the action, walk around if necessary.

When you can't get close

  • Keep your arms below shoulder height.
  • Support your hips against, for example, a table.
  • Keep your knees and back as straight as possible.

If you have to work above shoulder height

  • Find support for your arms and alternate.
  • Do not reach higher than just above your shoulder and do not exceed one minute.
  • Use a step stool or handle extender where necessary.

Tips

  • Check whether a different layout of the cabinet or shelving is possible. Place frequently used items between hip and shoulder height.
  • Check whether the size or weight of packaging can be limited.
  • Check whether the space between the packages or the stacking can be adjusted so that the item can be easily handled.
  • Provide reliable means to work at height and get on/off safely.
  • Alternate these activities with other activities.
