When you have to reach for something to reach it
- Do not reach further than your arm is long (40-60 cm).
- Make room so you can get closer.
- Use a step stool for grabbing small and light loads.
- Use a ladder for grabbing larger and heavier loads.
- Do not work for more than 1 minute with a moderately bent and/or twisted back/neck.
- If possible, use a tool, such as an extension or extended material.
- Support with your free hand.
- Stand on the same side as the action, walk around if necessary.
When you can't get close
- Keep your arms below shoulder height.
- Support your hips against, for example, a table.
- Keep your knees and back as straight as possible.
If you have to work above shoulder height
- Find support for your arms and alternate.
- Do not reach higher than just above your shoulder and do not exceed one minute.
- Use a step stool or handle extender where necessary.
Tips
- Check whether a different layout of the cabinet or shelving is possible. Place frequently used items between hip and shoulder height.
- Check whether the size or weight of packaging can be limited.
- Check whether the space between the packages or the stacking can be adjusted so that the item can be easily handled.
- Provide reliable means to work at height and get on/off safely.
- Alternate these activities with other activities.
