In the laboratory

Microscope

This is the best way to work with a microscope:

  • Place the microscope close.
  • Eyepiece at eye level.
  • Free legroom, good sitting, feet supported.
  • Forearms supported (not on sharp edges).
  • Neutral joint positions, possibly extend the handles with rubber rings.
  • Neutral neck and back position, back supported.
  • Alternate with other activities.
  • Good eye care.
  • Possibly video projection.
  • Possibly motorized microscopes.

This video shows you how to work best with the microscope.

Pipetting

Here's the best way to pipet:

  • Preferably sit down.
  • Sit upright with good back and foot support.
  • Upper arms along the body, avoid lifting arms for a long time.
  • Keep materials that you use a lot within reach.
  • Let the forearms rest as much as possible, not on sharp edges.
  • Relax the shoulders as much as possible.
  • Avoid bending the wrist.
  • Use low trays for used points.
  • Using pipettes with a good grip, light in weight, and doesn't require a lot of force.
  • Pipettes well maintained.
  • Use an electronic pipette whenever possible and convenient.

These videos show the best way to pipet and with which type of pipette.

Fume hood, sterile cabinet and safety cabinet

This is the best way to work with a fume hood, sterile cabinet and safety cabinet:

  • Upper arms along the body.
  • Legroom under the cabinet when sitting, foot room when standing.
  • Remove excess material from the cabinet.
  • Material within reach.
  • Possibly saddle stool.
  • Possibly turntable for storage.
  • Possibly movable armrest.
